Noctua NH-D15 with GTX 1080 ti

I'm building a deep learning AI system that can make full use of the GTX 1080 ti power when training models. It'll be running continuously for extended periods of times (potentially for a few days) at high power. I've chosen the Noctua NH-D15 as a cooler and had two questions about it:

1) Will it be capable of maintaining good temperatures that allow the system to run continuously?

2) The website mentions that on the motherboard I selected, it'll block the first PCI slot and will have to shift the graphics card over. I read that this is the "prime" slot for best use of the gpu. Do you think it'll degrade how much power I'm getting out of it because of this change?

Also, is this an appropriate build for this purpose?

Thanks!

Well it'd be physically impossible as a) no mounting brackets exist, and b) even if they did exist...

It would be quite something attaching an NH-D15 on a gpu.
Sorry I realized I wasn't clear in my explanation. I meant that I'm using the cooler for the cpu but the way it's going to be placed would overlap my first pci x16 slot so I won't be able to put the gpu there. I have another pci x16 slot (third one down) that I can use. However I read conflicting posts about whether the non-first pci x16 slot would provide the same performance as the first one. So to sum up, would placing my gpu in the third slot down (still x16) on an Aorus z270x Gaming 9 motherboard reduce the gpu's capabilities relative to placing it in the first slot?

Well it'd be physically impossible as a) no mounting brackets exist, and b) even if they did exist you'd most likely wind up breaking your card due to the excess weight.

Yeah PCI slot placement isn't that big of a deal. The extra slots are there for 2 and 3 way SLI usage and they're the same speeds as the other PCI slots. So you can use the card in the lower most slot and be fine. It's really a matter of how you set your airflow up.

Bro he will put it on his gpu.

No he will not, pay atention "I'm using the cooler for the cpu but the way it's going to be placed would overlap my first pci x16 slot so I won't be able to put the gpu there", a few posts above.

You're correct Dragos Manea, I won't be placing it on my gpu. It sounds like a disastrous idea.

Thanks for the heads up about the ram clearance. Turned out that it won't fit with the two fans in place even if I raise the second one. It'll have to be a single fan setup.

But the Noctua seems to be a headache for its size. Would you recommend an alternative that would do the job but not be as big? Keeping in mind that I'll be running the computer at full power continuously for a few days at a time to process my data. And that I might expand the number of gpus in the future.

Sounds good, I'll look into those. Thanks for the help everyone, I appreciate it!

This cooler is not ok anymore, it is designed to transfer heat a bit more slowly, while the new cooler are more effective in transfering heat. An i7 700k will overheat with this cooler with prolonged 100% usage.

OP go for noctua or a 240mm liquid cooling.

They are really big and they obstruct ram slots.

EDIT: I m have almost the same cooler as you, nh-d15 because it is the only serious cooler for am4 and trust me i hardly wait for my corsair h100i v2 bracket for AM4 because it restricts me very much.
