We are trying to upgrade the old girl (aka my 7 year old desktop computer) and while we don't want to spend a ton of money on it I would like to get more RAM. While I feel fairly confident to install it I am not sure about how to pick out what I need.

Here are current system specs, I am probably giving too much info copying descriptions from newegg but would rather do that then not enough. I am wanting to double the RAM from 6 gb to 12 gb. I am also planning to upgrade the graphics card. I would love links to exactly what I should buy since I know there are so many variances, Thank you!

If you want to upgrade it for gaming, upgrade your GPU first (even something like a GTX 1050ti/RX 460 will do if you're on a tight budget). Then when you can in the future, do a CPU, motherboard and RAM upgrade (you have to do all at the same time).

Even if you upgraded with components like an i3 7100, 8gb of DDR4 RAM, and a GTX 1050ti/RX 460, it'll run pretty decent in games...

Sorry to be that guy who doesn't actually answer your question. But is there any specific reason you want to upgrade your RAM?

If I'm honest, I really wouldn't recommend spending the money on upgrading your RAM if you're just looking to make you PC faster.
In your case upgrading your RAM wouldn't make that much of a difference in every day use, and wouldn't make any difference in the majority of games.

You'd be much better off just waiting till you can eventually do a motherboard/CPU upgrade, and basically have a fresh new system. Especially since you'll need to upgrade your RAM again when doing that.

I wouldn't want to spend more than $200.

Thinking of upgrading the RAM because my husband really wants to play COD black ops 3 and even with a new graphics card I was thinking it would run better with more RAM? Or maybe not? It would mainly be for gaming purposes, otherwise the computer runs fine with what we use it for.

Thanks again for any advice.

Ram doesn't affect gaming very much.
For games a CPU + GPU upgrade would be optimal.

Here's the cheapest parts I could throw together that would make your system modern and run great in games. It all depends on your budget, but I wouldn't go any cheaper than that.

Edit: Also, if he's really into his gaming and you want a PC that'll last longer, this would be the next step up. I wouldn't get a 470 since it's only $10 cheaper than a much better 480.
