second monitor turns off when hdmi cable is connected

Have new Asus Zen AiO and Asus 24 inch hdmi monitor. first time booted up monitors worked fine. Later that evening went in and tried to make second monitor an extension, didnt seem to work so clicked windows icon + P and both screens went dark. If I unplug the second monitor the computer works fine but when I plug the monitor in via the hdmi cable the monitors go black and then the second monitor shuts down. Computer is working behind the black screen if I manipulate the hdmi cable I can keep the mouse on detect button and I can recover the second screen. doesnt seem to make a diufference in that it all came back for about 20 seconds and just as I was workin up to a happy dance it blacked out again. Help Please
