Games Keep On Freezing Whole PC

Okay so I'm new here, tried asking for help over on Reddit, but they didn't really help. I've just built my first PC, and everything works fine... until it comes to playing games.

I load up CSGO, go onto the weapons course and boom. Whole screen goes grey, loops the last played sound, and freezes. The only way I can get out of this is by turning off the tower itself and turning it back on again. I thought this may be a self contained issue, so I tried playing Skyrim. Didn't even get out of the opening credits.

I have downloaded all the latest drivers for my GPU but I still can't play games, I don't get it. I also reinstalled Windows to see if that would help, to no avail.

I'm at the end of my tether guys, I really need help. I didn't leave my PS4 and spend all this money on PC to not be able to play games.

Parts:

Pentium 64560
Prime B250-A Motherboard
RX 480 8GB
Ballistix Sports DDR4 4x4GB
CX450M PSU

Hello!

It sounds like this may be a stability issue with either the RAM/CPU/GPU. Have you attempted any overclock on any of these components? Does your RAM support XMP, and if so is this enabled? Also did you make sure in the bios is all of you DIMM's are being utilized?

I hope to be of some help to you

Hello, thank you for replying.

I checked the BIOS, and all of them are being utilized. I have not tried any overclocking whatsoever, and I'm not sure if my RAM supports X.M.P. Either way, that setting is disabled.

Hmm... There is the possibility that you have a faulty power supply as unlikely as that may be, in which case if you purchased it recently, you could probably contact corsair and RMA it.

Also have you attempted to check for ram stability or CPU stability in prime95 to isolate the issue? Also maybe check the GPU stability and run fur mark for a little while.

One other problem may be that the CPU or GPU is not getting enough power. I'd suggest if you've not already to check and make sure that all the power connectors are secure.

The power connections are all secured. A thing of note though, I tried to run Furmark and it instantly went to the grey screen again, forcing me to hard reset. Does this mean my GPU is faulty?

I've searched around the internet for some solutions and apparently, a lot of rx 480 owners are having similar issues to yours.

It seems that recent drivers have proven to be unstable, and crash graphically intensive tasks, and even in a state of idleness.
Anything past driver 1.7.2 is unstable, and supposedly won't be fixed until driver 1.8.3

You can go back to your old drivers by either searching up for the driver version that I put for your graphics card, or you can go to display settings and change it from there. You can start by going to Advanced Display Settings, Display Adapter Properties, Properties, Driver, and then roll back driver.

LMK if that works, or if you've already tried that.

Hmm that gives me hope that this is easily fixable and that I haven't been cursed with a faulty GPU.

So you're saying I have to go to an older driver? Okay, the problem is that the newest one was installed when I turned on the PC as it is newly built, and it won't let me roll back as the option is greyed out.

I'm trying to look for a way to manually install a older driver but I can't find anything. Also, when you say version 1.7.2, do you mean 17.2.1? I can't find anything that just has 3 digits on AMD's driver downloads.

It's very unlikely that it's a hardware issue. Did you uninstall your previous drivers before you installed the new ones? Sometimes the GPU can opt for the most current version if installed on the computer.

Even if I didn't do this, I deleted the previous one and reinstalled again just to see if it worked. Unfortunately it didn't. I can easily test now if the GPU is working correctly because when I load up Skyrim, there are these sort of white spots that flicker across the screen.

Well, one of my last few suggestions would be to see if you could RMA it, or contact the manufacture themselves as they have to deal with this stuff all the time and probably have the right answer for you.

Check ur CPU temps. Usually when ur CPU temp goes above a certain point you can get freezes or either massive framedips, or game crashes when you get to the trottlepoint of a CPU. Crashes are to prevent the CPU to burn up and are a sign to check out what the problem is.
I assume you cant even do anything when this happens.

How would I do this? I can't check the temps when the system freezes, will they still be the same after I've reset it? Also, what temperature would be too high?

Download Real Temp (Intel CPUs only) Run the game in window mode so you can have real temp on the side of the screen and play as you usually do and check if the temp now and then reach around 80C° or above while playing. If it goes up to around 80C almost right away you have a cooling problem. If not next step.

Btw if you have the same problem in other games you can test this method in other games aswell.

Downloaded it, I tried to run the Valley benchmark by Unigine just to see what would happen. It literally froze as soon as I ran that, going into the grey screen. I noticed that the CPU temp was only 40 though.

Ok good, that means the CPU isnt the problem.
Have you changed anything with the GPU settings? Voltage, Clock, Mem?
