So i had a friend overclock my i7 920 and i was getting pretty high temps on 100 % load around 83%, I don't really know what he did, I've been reading on overclocking my i7 920 for quite a bit im pretty sure i understand just wanted to double check with someone :D

I7 920 D0 OC 3.8ghz
GTX 760
Asus Rampage 2 extreme
16 gb ram

If everything's working then great. I don't see any obvious issues.

Probably a better cooler would bring the temperatures down and reduce fan noise but unless you care about that it's fine. (Temperature is more about longevity but at this point you probably don't care, and from what I remember 83degC is at the high end of what I'd use prolonged but probably fine).
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/overclock-core-i7,2268-10.html

No mention of temperature but 83degC sounds about right with a half decent cooler (if that's under load).

I'm showing that the performance potential is just over 40% vs stock, AND that they could achieve up to about 4GHz for this article so the overclock sounds realistic at 3.8GHz.

*Basically that's an old CPU which will struggle in many games to NOT be the bottleneck. It's still a good gaming system overall, however you'll just need to carefully TWEAK the game settings to achieve the best balance of FPS, smoothness, and visuals.

The i7-920 might be relatively weak PER CORE but it is still Hyperthreaded so a well threaded game like DOOM should make good use of that CPU. Probably use even 90% of all eight threads.

Just for COMPARISON:

i5-7500: https://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=Intel+Core+i5-7500+%40+3.40GHz&id=2910

i7-920: https://cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=Intel+Core+i7-920+%40+2.67GHz&id=834

Now the i5-7500 isn't overclockable so bump up the i7-920 scores by 40%. Now the SINGLE THREAD score is most important, especially with a 4-core (physical) CPU.

With overclocking, and a well hyperthreaded game we get closer to the i5-7500 though.

*However, the worst-case seems to be the i7-920 at 3.8GHz would get about 80% the FPS of the i5-7500. The best case is the SAME (GPU bottleneck next CPU).

Just pointing out it's not so bad, especially if you tweak the game carefully.

I'm getting 49 to 50 on idle and 83 max load,
I'm pretty sure im not using a stock cooler either, it says master cooler on it. lol

He's a close friend of mine, I just wanted to double check and to get some better knowledge on it
