Hello,
I'm starting my programming school this sept,
I would like to have your opinion on the computer that I'll be buying.
ATM, I'm trying to decide if i should be buying a laptop that includes an i7-7500u cpu or should I have a i7-7700hq CPU.

I would like the computer to be running pretty solid for the next 4 years, The thing is that the HQ is more expensive than the core u and I'm a bit short on cash ATM.
should i be keeping some money for a HQ and or will the core u will be fine as well?
Any suggestions?

Solution
The 7700HQ provides twice the amount of cores, 100 more MHz clock, and a little more cache in response for power and heat.

If you are a lighter user (taking notes, web browsing, etc) the 7500U will provide better battery life.

The HQ will necessarily be in a thicker/larger/heavier notebook. It really depends on what you're comfortable lugging around. Personally, I found 14" to be the upper limit for class when I was in college, with ~13.3 being the sweet spot for me, but YMMV.

I own both i7-7700HQ (HP OMEN) and i7-7500u (HP Envy).

OMEN:
- i7-7700HQ
- 17" UHD (4K)
- 12GB RAM (DDR4-2400)
- 256GB M2 PCIe SSD

Envy:
- i7-7500u
- 17" UHD (4K) touch panel
- 16GB RAM (DDR4-2133?)
- 512GB M2 SSD (SATA?)

I am a computer software engineer. My primary usage is for the Microsoft Visual Studio 2017. I compiled exactly the same source code on both machines. Since the solution file consists of multiple projects, it uses multi-cores to compile the source code. Very weird.

Conclusion:
i7-7700HQ is slightly faster than i7-7500u but not much. But i7-7700HQ takes longer than i7-7500u for booting up and shutting down Windows. This should be opposite because i7-7700HQ PC has 1) way faster SSD, 2) less memory.

But when I watch Xfinity TV on Google Chrome and do other work simultaneously, i7-7700HQ is definitely better performance than i7-7500u. This can be explained by the number of cores.

i7-7500u's battery life is definitely better than i7-7700HQ's.
