XMP and RAM speed - anything to watch out for?

My 3000Mhz RAM was running at the default 2133Mhz on my ASUS X99 Pro MB.

ASUS said that, in order for it to run at 3k, I would have to overclock or simply engage XMP.

I turned on XMP and the RAM is now at 3000Mhz.

I have made no other manual changes in BIOS. Just XMP.

The machine is used for video and large file photo editing.

Is there anything I should watch out for in terms of CPU heat etc. after the XMP switch?

Any other changes I should make?

I just trying to make image file and video rendering as efficient as possible.

Thanks.

D.

Ps. CPU is i6800k. Card is GTX 1070.

Yes, get "CPU Z" to check CPU, and "GPU Z" for GPU. If we are talking strictly CPU, when you first open up the application, you'll be in the CPU tab. Look down the left side where it says, "technology", and right next to the right will be your core voltage.

XMP sets the ram at what it is designed for. I am assuming that you have a cooler designed for the I7 so as long as the ambient temp of your case is in the normal range there is no need to worry about overheating of the RAM or CPU as you are running it at what it was designed to be run at. Unless you are desiring to overclock about the only other thing i normally do is turn off legacy boot mode and load the os in UEFI mode.

Thanks for the prompt reply.

I'm using an NZXT Kraken X61 CPU cooler.

I don't think I need to overclock.

The only other thing I'd like to do is maximise my cards performance. (Not the forum for that, I know) I'm assuming that the rendering speed of edits made in still and video software (e.g. Brightness/Contrast adjustments) are influenced in large part by the GPU?

Thanks again.

I had the same thing happen to me. I have a quad channel 32GB ram kit from corsair (I do video editing and compositing), and my ram was running at 1366Mhz as apposed to the advertised 2400Mhz. So I also had to enable the XMP profile, and set it to it's advertised clock speed.

Things to watch out for, make sure your latency is correct (mine was a C11 kit so I had to adjust my latency accordingly), and make note that enabling this XMP profile sends more voltage to your ram to have it run at higher speeds, and this can, in turn, send more voltage to other components in your rig. For example, after having 'overclocked' my ram to its specified clock speeds, this also slightly increased the voltage to my CPU, which now perpetually runs at its boost speed (which I am not at all upset about). Hope this helps mate.

Is there an App that will allow me to check things such as voltages, without having to go into BIOS?

i.e. Can I check these things within Windows 10?

On the issue of voltages to the CPU; to be honest, I have no idea what the default/base voltage is to my i6800k. So, if the reading is higher now, I wouldn't know any different.

Thanks again.

Depending on what editing software you use, GPU acceleration is only utilized during playback, and rendering effects in the timeline. As for exporting, that's all CPU. If you want to maximize your card's performance, download MSI afterburner, and watch some tutorials on it. It is a relatively simple overclocking software, and give you REALLY good results (it's what I used when overclocking my MSI 1070's in SLI).

Yup, you are totally fine. I have an i7 4790K at 1.302 V and it is stable and safe. You are totally fine my man
