Hello,

I currently have old Xeon x5672
overclocked at 4.6 ghz.

the cpu has 4 cores 8 threads in 1366 socket, stock is 3.2 ghz.

I have option to upgrade to Xeon x5690, which has 6 cores and 12 threads,
slightly more higher frequency in stock (3.5 ghz)
but probably less overclockable due to lower max temp.

Also x5672 has better l3 cashe , but x5690 has better l2 cashe.
very confusing.

Both cpu has same nm, just difference in core #s but less max temp for x5690.

My budget is limited so newer cpu for different motherboard is not an option.

Solely for gaming and everyday use ( no streaming but some stream recording from live stream videos), will this upgrade worth it for $80 ??

Solution
For gaming, no. Games don't benefit from more cores. You have the equivalent of an overclocked old i7. That is about as good as you can do for gaming.
