Laptop connected to TV leads to terrible lag on laptop

When I tried to connect my Asus laptop to my living room TV I noticed that it makes the laptop perform really poorly. The mouse becomes really laggy and when I try to play games it seems locked to 30 FPS.

Any way I can stop this?

Probably the higher resolution of the TV putting more stress on the graphics card(built in GPU). Try adjusting the resolution down down from say 4K to 1080p.
