I currently have an FX-8350 and have an AMD Ryzen 1800X and ASUS ROG Crosshair VI set to be delivered in 4 days time. I am currently running Windows 7 Pro, and I am curious as to whether I should upgrade to Windows 10 before installing my new hardware. I would rather not have to do a clean install, I have a great deal of files and programs that cannot be backed up due to the sheer size of the computer I maintain and I do not have access to a Windows 10 Install disc or image anyways.

Thanks Lucky, looks like I will have to do a clean install, but there shouldn't be any issues if I can manage to get everything backed up.

Rogue, thanks for the media creation tool, I completely forgot about that.

And dumb_man you are still able to upgrade to Windows 10 as long as you registered for the upgrade during the upgrade period. I just looked in my update settings and my windows 10 upgrade is still available to install.

having a clean install is recommended since u r gonna be changing mobo, cpu which all require new drivers.
back up ur files n install clean if u look forward to having no issues.

A few things

At this point Ryzen REQUIRES Windows 10. There may be ways around this but MS has basically said that updates in Win 7 won't work with Ryzen, its a real risk.

You can download the Win 10 media creation tool here: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10 that will give you an installer. Now your Win 7 product key should still work with it despite Microsoft ending that program. If not you can always buy a license.

Finally running an old harddrive on a new build is ALWAYS a bad idea. It may not even boot, but if it does boot, it will not run nearly as well as a fresh install. It comes down to being a waste of money.

If you want to know anymore I have that CPU/MOBO combo, check my "Gaming PC" in my signature.

We have had users reporting that it still works. It is worth a shot at this point.

Windows 7 works perfectly fine with Ryzen apart from a few new features that don't have driver support on it. You can get updates for Ryzen too but you have to avoid a specific patch which disables Windows Updates on "unsupported CPUs."

Microsoft is really desperate to force people to upgrade to Windows 10 and is stooping to ever lower lows to force-feed it to people who refuse it. I wasn't planning to build a new PC for myself any time soon but if Microsoft continues pulling BS like that, I might build one, perhaps with a Ryzen APU, just so I have a Linux PC on the side and see how much of what I do can be moved over without much effort.
