Ram install problem

I have an HP Pavilion 550-132d desktop. It came with a 4gb pc3-12800 ddr3-1600 ram installed. I decided to upgrade it to 12gb by adding an 8gb ram with the same specs as the ram installed. After I installed the newly bought ram in the slot, the pc opened but the system information shows that I only have a 4gb ram installed and didn't recognize the 8gb installed. I checked the motherboard specs and it supports up to 16gb of ram. The OS is 64-bit so it can run up to 128gb of ram. The ram is seated correctly and is tight in the slot. When I thought of using only the 8gb and removing the 4gb, the pc didn't open and had a beeping sound. What should I do?

Solution
Mixing & matching RAM can be problematic (as in not buying matching kits of 4x4GB etc).

The 8GB module may not 'play nice' with the existing 2x4GB modules.

That being said though, the 8GB module isn't working by itself? Sure, the OS can support vast quantities of RAM, but if your board supports a max 16GB and has 4 slots - 9/10 times that means it'll only support a max 4x4GB...... so 4GB modules being the max per slot.

Sometimes you luck out, and 2x8GB will work too - but generally, if the board spec supports a max 16GB of 4 slots, 4GB increments is the only 'official' way to increase your RAM.

Funny...HP often uses proprietary hardware...Can you post the memory specs (The original)?

My best bet is the first memory is from HP and the one you put is not ...Same as motherboard, HP's...If you bought the new memory from HP you wouldnt have a problem....now you have 2 incompatible pieces of hardware...The PC will only work with the original memory...That's my guess...

Return the 8gb stick and buy a supported 2 x 8gb kit.

Ram is sold in kits for a reason.
A motherboard must manage all the ram using the same specs of voltage, cas and speed.
Ram from the same vendor and part number can be made up of differing manufacturing components over time.
Some motherboards can be very sensitive to this.
That is why ram vendors will NOT support ram that is not bought in one kit.

You want documented ram compatibility. If you should ever have a problem, you want supported ram.
Otherwise, you risk a finger pointing battle between the ram and motherboard support sites, claiming "not my problem".
One place to check is your motherboards web site.
Look for the ram QVL list. It lists all of the ram kits that have been tested with that particular motherboard.
Sometimes the QVL list is not updated after the motherboard is released.
For more current info, go to a ram vendor's web site and access their ram selection configurator.
Enter your motherboard, or pc and you will get a list of compatible ram kits.
