Hi All,

Please help me on the Atel Amf R890 3g mobile wifi router.

This is the link for the pictures. http://imgur.com/a/j3nQa

I have this modem with me. I use this wifi modem for

internet when I travel. It is only 3g speed. This internet

data and account is linked to my home broadband internet. I

only have 1 internet account and 1 bill. Meaning, the amount

of data i use with the Atel modem is charged on the same home

broadband internet account and bill. I hope you get what I

mean.

The thing I dont understand is, how does this Atel modem be

able to access the internet without using a sim card? I have

never been issued a sim card from my ISP. But every time I

turn on the modem, it is able to connect to the internet to

my account. Please help me to understand.

This is what the settings in the modem look like.

So I assume this modem is using an old method of connecting

instead of using sim?
I just type in my username and password in the modem

configurations and I can use the internet.

Below are the link to the seller/distributor where this modem

might have come from.
http://atel.uz/eng/c1aspfid24.htm

Are there other brands of mobile modem/wifi which do exactly

the same job? Meaning to connect to the internet without

using a sim card?
Also I am only getting slow 3g speeds with this Atel modem.

Is there a 4g model modem/wifi with faster download

speeds......or other 4g modem/wifi which do the same job.

Meaning connect to the internet without a sim card but uses

the data from my home internet.

Sorry for this long post and with many questions. Please

help me out. Thank you. I appreciate it.

Kind Regard
Johnson.

Solution
Even if you were to buy another atel device they would still have to activate it to their system. Will they activate a new device on your account. I suspect they won't. This is like the grandfathered unlimited data plans in the USA. The ISP does everything they can to get rid of these old accounts so they can make people pay more money for less service.

Unclear what you question is. It is using the older CDMA technology. These do not use sim cards....technically it sorta does it is just built into the device.

It can't actually be using the data from your home internet it must be connecting to a cell tower. Your ISP though may do something strange with the billing to combine your home and mobile broadband usage.

Thank you for replying.

I had multiple questions in my post. 2 were answered by you. 1 is how is it possible for my atel modem to connect to the internet without a sim card? Your answer is it is using old cdma technology. 2nd question is regarding my bill and data usage when I use the Atel mobile modem when I travel. Yes, you are correct that my Atel modem is connecting to a tower and my ISP is combining my usage on the road and home together on the same account and bill.

Some other questions are as follows.
Are there any alternative old cdma mobile modems such as Atel Amf R890 that I can purchase which will do the same job like without using sim cards?
Are there faster mobile modems or 4g mobile modems that will allow me to connect to the cell tower without using sim cards? Like how I am using my Atel Amf R890 modem now.

I appreciate your answers and help.

Why would you really care if they use sim cards or not. The faster LTE based systems all use sim cards. It is mostly going to be if the company you get your internet service from supports other technology than your current one. If they do most times they give you the sim card. One that used sim cards would actually be more flexible because it would not depend so much on the device only the sim card that you could put in different devices.

Whatever you use they would still have to activate either the device or the sim card to tie it to your account.

Here is where the situation I am stuck in. I bought the old cdma Atel Amf R890 modem which does not use sim card from my ISP in 2013. Then in 2014, my ISP introduced Huawei EC5321 to replace the old Atel Amf R890. The Huawei EC5231 uses a sim card to connect to the net. However, my ISP will still bill the customers to the same data account, when they are using the Huawei EC5321 or the home broadband.

Now my ISP now no longer sells the Atel Amf R890 nor the Huawei Ec5321, when I went to ask last week. They will still provide the mobile internet services to the existing customers who are holding those 2 devices. My Atel Amf is a bit faulty so I want to find a replacement. I cant buy the Huawei EC5321 from online because my ISP will not issue any more new sim cards. So I am stuck at finding a replacement Atel Amf R890 or similar devices which will allow me to connect to the cell tower without using a sim card. Just typing my user name and password will do. Hope you know what I mean.

Those ISP sales rep are pushing the customers to 4g plans. They said to me I can keep my home DSL broadband at $55.00 a month. And subscribe to a 4g pocket wifi plan for another $42.00 a month so that i have internet when I am out of the house. Do you see the marketing techniques my ISP employ? My ISP is pushing me to subscribe to an unnecessary 2nd data plan.

I have a low standard of living in and subscribing to another new data plan is double costing to me. I am just a low wage earner, can't afford to meet 2 internet data bills at the moment. Hope you understand. But I can save up and buy another Atel Amf R890 or some devices that are similar. Any more advice from you is appreciated.

Kind Regards
Johnson

You got a good point. I will have to go back to my ISP and ask again if they will activate my replacement Atel Amf r890 if I do get one. Of if they can give me a sim card for Huwei Ec5321, that will be good too, because it's easier to find that Huawei Ec5321 then Atel Amf.

When I change to a better job, then I can consider to get 2 data plans for home and traveling.

bill001g, thanks so much for your input. Much appreciated.
