My LAN/internet was fine last night. I did not update or dl anything that day or the day before. I shut down the computer as a thunderstorm rolled in. Lots of lightning and thunder so close the house was shaking. Turned on PC this morning and I get no internet, and it says "not connected - no connections are available". Can't see this PC on LAN either. Running the troubleshooting it says there's no Ethernet cable plugged it. I unplugged it and plugged it back in, both ends, restarted the computer, reset the modem, used system restore to 4 days ago (although nothing has changed since then), anti-virus came up clean, tried ipconfig /reset but it said it can't with no connection (or something like that). Basically I tried a lot of stuff found here and nothing worked.

Is it possible for an ethernet cable to suddenly go bad? Did the nearby lightning fry something? Phones, other PC, wifi are all fine. I dont have another cable to try, is there anything else left to try besides that?

Thanks!

A cable going bad is unlikely, but not impossible.

Sounds like you lost your networking driver has disappeared (for whatever reason).... or worse, the ethernet port has failed.

You can use another computer to download your boards network driver, move it over to your setup via a USB/External HDD/Disk etc and then install.

If that doesn't work, it's possible your ethernet port has failed (again, uncommon, but not impossible).
If that's the case, you can either RMA/Replace your motherboard, or purchase an ethernet addon card.

Thanks for your replies everyone. I'm not familiar with this sort of thing so bare with me.

I don't know what rma is, google didnt help, sorry. Wouldn't the system restore to 4 days put the drivers back the way they were? I know that fixed my issues before when nvidia drivers were screwing up. I don't have a usb drive; guess I'll pick one up tomorrow and try it.

There's light on the back of the pc as far as I can see cept a tiny red one the top, away from port, that stays on. Still tried and nothing lit up or off when I unplugged/plugged in. Wish I could attach a pic. Frankly I'm not familiar with the router and modem in the basement; I'm not the one that set it up and that person is no longer here. I don't know which light to look for.

Is is possible to replace just the port? That mobo was frickin expensive... although that was like 2/3 years ago so.

It's weird there's been lots of lightning strikes and power outages before and but now Murphy's Law is in full swing lol.

Thank you! Can confirm, no lights on at back of PC. The other end is plugged into the wall, no lights exist there. Router, modem, and.... some other thing(?) are in the basement. Pics here: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/0B2EpyX5hHlvbcGI3bHFpRFd0MW8?usp=sharing but it looks like all the lights to corresponding cables are on.

For the record, it's a X97-Pro motherboard. Will try installing drivers tomorrow; just got home from a 12hr shift today. Thanks again!
