Would I be stupid to upgrade from a rx 480 8gb to a 1070?

Hey guys. Just recently bought a HTC Vive and love it !. The 480 plays all games, some on low. I want to supersample though. I want to get rid of a bit of blurryness. Here is my situation. I have 50 dollars in amazon giftcards right now, I have an gtx 760 im going to sell for around 50 dollars, and I have my rx 480 I could sell for around 180. In the end I would spend anywhere from 50-100 dollars to get my new 1070. Would I be stupid to do this. My 1070 will hold its value, and at most I would lose 30-50 dollars if I wanna sell my 1070 after buying it. I love my vive, I want a good experience. Just want other opinions, thanks!

no recommendation considering that brands offer different offerings between price, performance, build quality, warranty, reputation, noise level, heat dissipation/cooling and RGB. I think the biggest dealbreaker is the lack of RGB and color scheme. If there's no RGB, no buy.

But seriously, that's the best part about online shopping. Comparing what's good and bad on amazon/newegg or micro center and fry's if that's in your area. You can enjoy a beer or soda while reading articles & watching youtube product reviews for a few days and reaffirming what's best for you. Gigabyte, EVGA, MSI, Zotac, Asus and plenty of other manufacturers all have a reputation to hold, so regardless of bias and previous experience, try each of them. They're all...

i wouldn't categorize it as stupidity per se. The rx 480 is in line with the nvidia gtx 1060, and you clearly want a gtx 1070 that is a $100 more to upgrade from anywhere between 20% to 40% faster (33% avg, okay - let's agree on that for now). If you're able to sell your rx 480 and get a gtx 1070, you're also getting some extra NVIDIA features, like CUDA cores and physx. Plus, nvidia has some cool games that run better on nvidia cards. Remember, the rx 480 was advertised to be an entry mainstream VR ready graphics card. 1070 should be more stable at VR. Not a bad upgrade as long as you are able to sell your rx 480. However, AMD's vega is near in Q2 2017 and later this year. You have the options of waiting and being patient OR just going with your gut feeling. There's never a wrong/right reason to spend money on things you care about :p

For $50-100 that would be a good performance jump. You could also consider grabbing a 2nd RX 480 as from what I've seen 2x RX 480 gets close to GTX 1080 performance in many titles but this would require more power usage and CrossFire scaling can be inconsistent with some games. Just giving some suggestions but yes a GTX 1070 is pretty good for only $50-100 after you sell you current cards. Hope this helps :)

*Edit* Waiting for Vega soon would indeed be a good idea as bboiprfsr said if you aren't that desperate for an upgrade right now.
