How do I reset my IP without waiting for the Leash?

Hey, so I have this issue where my internet will go down periodically (most likely to ddosing, it's very stable, otherwise). A guy I used to be good friends with (just friends now), loves ddosing people like crazy, and there's no way to get around it, unfortunately. Now, I have a ARRIS DOCSIS 3.0 Touchstone Modem, MODEL: DG1670A. Don't be fooled, it says residential but I'm on a business-class internet connection. With it being higher up, I can't sign in to the modem. At all. I've tried using a bunch of methods, even called them up to complain about that, so I can't even do something as simple as port forwarding. Anyway, in order for me to reset my public ip address, I need to take my modem out for 24 hours, no less. This is a hassle, and if I keep getting hit offline, then it becomes a big issue. Now, I have another router (linksys or netgear, I think netgear), it's pretty generic. I want to know if there is any possible way I can change my ip address without waiting the 24 hours (by the way, it doesn't show when my lease was renewed or anything like that, and those particular commands don't work at all in this case). I heard there are some methods with using my router and a mac address or something etc etc but I'm not 100% sure (I'm a noob when it comes to beginner level networking with an intermediate problem. Thank you very much in advance.

Pretty much he will run out of money and quit. Getting a botnet that you can then attack people with it not trivial and the guys that actually do it would rather make money by renting it out than actually doing ddos attacks themselves. Anyone who claims they can do ddos attack themselves is a stupid script kiddie who doesn't have a clue about networking.

Doing a DoS attack from your house in addition to exposing your ip to who you are attacking doesn't work. In most cases you will just dos yourself because you will exceed your upload rate well before you can exceed some other persons download rate.

You really should only have to get your ip changed once and he should not be able to obtain your IP again. You of course need to...

You really should only have to get your ip changed once and he should not be able to obtain your IP again. You of course need to avoid things that expose your ip address. Skype may still have a exposure. Any private server you use either for games of for voice may expose your IP, it depends who controls it and of course console games expose it many time.

The simple solution although it will cost you $5-$10/month is to use a VPN service. You want one that has a data center in a city near you since you are only concerned about protecting the connection from your house to the data center. If it is located near you you will not add much latency. If one of your other routers supports client vpn or you can load dd-wrt on it and put it between your devices and your cable router.

Any attack would be against the vpn data center which pretty much can't be ddos and since the ip you use is shared by many people no unknown traffic is passed to you.
