so i am new to overclocking, and i can only get 4.02Ghz at 1.28v stable without getting too high of cpu temps.
im using asus m5a99fx pro r2.0
amd fx 8300
cryorig h7 cooler with an extra fan added to push air through.

is this about what i am going to get out of this cpu?
do i need to look at liquid cooling options?
it seems like a lot of people are getting around 4.4-4.6Ghz from what im finding online.

any help would be awesome!

61C is pretty much the max that chip should ever go, any higher they will throttle, I got my FX8320 to 5ghz on the Original H100 with a ASRock 990FX Fatality Professional 12+2 phases, My chip happen to be really good at overclocking, and boy it was hot. I disabled the Thermal throttling and after about 4 hours of Prime 95 temps were around 67C on the cores, I wouldn't recommend going that high.....

Right now its currently is another system sitting at 4.6ghz with the H80I v2 with 1.42v, Temps get around 55C with prime for about an hour, I can't fit the h100 in that case.

But for around 4.6ghz, you will want the at least the H80I for the 8 core or a Noctua DH15 air cooler, The 6 cores are easy to cool on the h60 or even a nice Air...

im staying around 4C margin using AMD overdrive
when i reset everything in the bios to optimized defaults and enable turbo core, it runs the 4.01Ghz with 10C margins

I would make the switch to water cooling. 3.3 to 4.0 is a big jump, but at those temps, it's not reliable. You need a better cooling solution. Even switching to a good AIO cooler would help tremendously. You can pick up a Corsair H100i 240MM off of Amazon for about $115. If you wanna go the 120MM route, the Corsair H60 keeps my FX 6300 nice and cool with a 4.2GHz OC on it. The 120MM coolers aren't as efficient as 240MM coolers, but they work, and they're not as expensive, either. The H60 is around $60 on Amazon.
