What is a good wifi card to get for a desktop?

Hey guys, i normally run wired connection on my desktop but it restricts my download speed for some reason. With the wired connection i get 15-20 mbps on my desktop where as on my laptop in the same room i get 35+ on wireless.

So which wifi card should i consider getting considering the speeds of my wireless connection. Im from the UK if that makes any difference.

I would try and fix the wired connection first. A Wired ethernet connection would usually always be preferable and faster.

Can you check what speed/duplex it is connecting at? Also what router/switch are you plugged into? Have you tried another ethernet cable?

do you know what kind of motherbord is in your computer? thw problem may be the age of your computer in that it only gas a 10/100M erernet adapter and not a modern gigabit one. you can always get another Ethernet adapter too.

My ethernet adapter is fairly old, id say around 2 years probably. But that shouldnt make a difference should it? The distance between the router and my desktop is large but i still get better speed on my laptop wireless.

for all anyone knew your computer could have been 10-20 years old and using a very old network adapter. but your motherboard does have gigabit ethernet so it should be faster then a wireless connection. maybe its a driver or maybe it a problem or limitation of your modem/router

Would getting a new powerline adapter help the issue? Or should i consider calling my ISP?

poweline adapters are usually worse then wifi. try calling your ISP first

Hold on, I didnt see that you are using powerline adapters.

They are likely the problem, or your electical system just isnt good enough for powerline adapters. Ive had solid 100mb connections using powerline adapters before no problem.

Make sure they are plugged directly into the power sockets, not going through any multiway adapters or surge protectors as they reduce performance a lot.

Its a tp link one, they are plugged directly into wall sockets and are not going through any extensions of any sort

Good catch RobCrezz about the powerline adapter. +UsaidYousaf What download and upload speeds are you paying for from your provider? Were it me, I'd go through the trouble of temporarily moving my rig to the same room as the home's router/switch/AP, and hard wiring it to see if I get the ISP's advertised speed. If so, then you know for certain that the power line adapter is the culprit. The other option is to run a very long Ethernet cable from your rig's current location to the router. I'm aware that both options would be a hassle to do.

Witth the Ethernet from my computer directly connected to my router, im getting 60mbps as a download speed. Seems like the adpters are the problem or the distance.
