Dual channel memory not working since CPU upgrade

Hi all,

I've recently upgraded my cpu to an i7 3770k (second hand). Since the upgrade I can't run the system in dual channel memory mode, but it works fine in single mode.

I've also gone back to my old i5 3570k and it runs fine in dual channel. Do you think this sounds like a cpu issue...if so any suggestions? I read that a pin might be bent...would this be easy to see/fix or could I easily break it?

Thanks,

Mark

Sure I can elaborate...
first of all, I was being sarcastic don't actually check for bent pins...

still running the same motherboard?
Have you updated BIOS or at least cleared the CMOS?
Did you fresh install windows?

No it doesn't sound like a CPU problem... Plus you can easily check for a bent pin yourself since you said you had swapped back and forth. But it is doubtful.

try using the Dual channel B setup or A if you are already using B.

Basically slot 1&3 or Slot 2&4

Thanks for your quick response. Yep same motherboard. I cleared the cmos before installing the cpu, but I haven't flashed the bios, it is at the latest version though. Is it worth flashing again?

I haven't been able to take it out again since I realised the issue was running it in dual channel - just waiting for some more thermal paste to turn up.

It crashes even when in the bios, without any hard drives plugged in to. Could you elaborate on why you don't think it would be a cpu issue as I haven't changed anything else and if I put my i5 back in then it works?

I'll give your suggestion of trying the other setup for ram too.

Thanks

Hi, yep I've set back to what I had before, using xmp profile with 1.5v 1600mhz. I also then put my i5 back in and it worked fine.

Maybe I should try a bios flash?

The ram also works fine in single channel too. I don't really want to go and start messing with the cpu pins, but I may have too as the seller is saying it was working fine in his system.

Thanks!

LGA CPUs have no pins. (pictured a 3770K and a 2600K)

The pads can be damaged I suppose but that's rare.
The pins are on the socket (the motherboard) if your other CPU worked fine I'm willing to bet your socket is fine.

Yes Re-flash the bios because... Why not? It's quick and easy and might fix your problem

Ahhh, so that's good I don't need to do anything with pins! :)

I'll try the different ram arrangement then try a bios flash. Is there a way to test the cpu for memory controller issues?
