I know this question gets asked a lot here and on various other forums but I have yet to find the right solution for me.

I have my desktop and various other devices connected to the internet through ethernet cables, and for most of the time this works.
When I started my computer this morning I saw that it was connected to my wifi instead of through the cable so I checked some things to make sure it was connected properly.
I have had this issue multiple times now and normally it is fixed with a quick fix like reinstalling the driver or even just rebooting the router.
However this time nothing I do seems to work. I have tried various fixes I have used in the past and also tried some I found on other posts, yet nothing seems to work.

Here are some details:
- The light on the back of the computer near where you plug the cable in is not blinking.
- The light on the router of the port I'm using is not blinking (others are, like the one connected to my PS4 and laptop)
- I have tried different ports, none of them work.
- I have put the cable that used to go into my desktop into various other devices and all of them connect to the internet so the cable is fine.
- I have rebooted both the desktop and the router several times.
- I have turned off the wifi to see if it would recognize it then but it doesn't.
- I have updated the driver (Realtek pcie gbe family controller, latest version 23-3-2017)
- I have reinstalled the driver
- I have deleted the driver and rebooted
- I have a VPN (NordVPN, private use) and a secure server (Pulse Secure, for my university) both of which I am not using at the moment and both are not connected.
- In the network adapter screen I see 4 networks: Bluetooth (Not Connected), Ethernet 1 (Realtek pcie gbe family controller, Ethernet cable not connected), Ethernet 2 (TAP-windows adapter V9, Ethernet cable not connected), and Wi-Fi (Connected)
- I have tried disabling and reabling them, but with no succes.

I have had the same problem once before where nothing seemed to work (This was after a thunder strike had hit our building) but for some reason it suddenly resolved itself.

I am running windows 8.1 on a pre-built MSI (MS-7851)

I have sufficient knowledge of PC to get how most of it works but I am far from an expert so I have no clue what to try next.

If you want more information I am happy to provide it!

Solution
The ethernet port is very common to go bad due to electrical spikes and other issues.
If you have a good PSU and surge protector then it is going to do its job and prevent electrical spikes, this unfortunatly means that the best means of "escape" for that extra load of electricity is through the ethernet port because it is wired to other devices that are powered (switches, routers, other computers, etc).
Either you have a faulty cable or you have a bad nic port to have this continous issue.

Test your ethernet cable with a laptop or other device and seee if ti works, make sure to twist and bend the wire a little bit to also make sure it does not have a bad conenction.
If it works flawlessly then you just need to get a replacement ethernet card. The inexpensive tp-link 1gbps card is pretty good.

I have tested the cable and it works fine. So I guess it must be the ethernet card. But how is it that a ethernet card (that is about a year old) can brake overnight?
