gl552vw bios... winflash reboots without doing anything useful

Hi there,

I have been trying to flash the bios of my GL552vw, as I have read that the 300 bios improves the fan cooling policy: at present the fan seems overly conservative and the gpu temperature reaches 82c quite fast during gaming (and throttles).

Winflash does something quite odd though. It happily recognises the bios update... but when I click to flash it, the utility skips the bios writing part and just says the computer will reboot to continue the process. I reboot and the bios is unchanged.

Any thoughts? This is a Chinese FX-PRO, by the way, reported as GL552vw in the ROG gaming centre. The downloaded bios is the same either way, from the ASUS site.

If I may just add: I have the USB key formatted ready to use the easyflash method, but I would just like someone knowledgeable to suggest a reason why winflash reboots without applying the bios (nor giving any error message).

Is I a sign that the USB method is doomed to result in a brick situation? How risky is this bios stuff anyway?

By the way, I definitely have the correct FX-Pro bios now. Downloaded it from the Chinese support site. Winflash is perfectly happy with it but doesn't apply it, just reboots.
