Drive full of data, but won't work without reformat.

I have a few hard drives laying around from previous computers. My current build has 8 slots, so I figured that (until I can afford new ones) I'd pop them in for a little storage-boost. The problem is that, in their current formats, a number of them aren't working with my computer, and I'd like to back them up to my external before I reformat them (note: by not working, I mean that viewing them in explorer can take hours, as each page needs minutes to load).

Hi, I 've seen this "phenomen" many times at other peoples boxes. You're not giving some information about the OS you're
running. So I asume it's a kind of Windows. What's probably is happening is the disk is having a corrupted filesystem. (Which is probably NTFS.) You can check and repair this with the chkdsk.exe. (Within Windows, use the cmd.exe utility.) So you shout use chkdsk with the repair options. (See Google for more information)
