Cloning to install larger storage capacity

After adding second ssd with larger storage do I need the image to stay on D:525 gb or can I format it because after install reads same volume as C: 240gb is this norm why wouldn't it read 525 gb on the D:. Can I keep both C: for access system D: for storage can someone give me the do and don't to this question. please help me search for this answers' none made sense to me. Dumbfounded on what to do next?
 
Solution
Most cloning tools I have used will default to making the destination clone the same size as the source disk. This is NOT what many want to do. But those cloners also usually have a way to choose to make the Partition on the new (larger) Destination device as big as you want. You have to find that and set it, not just let the tool do its default thing. Try re-doing the cloning operation and finding that setting option.
