Hey,

I got this computer for free, features an core2quad q6600, GTS 8800 from EVGA, 4gb of DDR2-800 RAM and a 500gb HDD. It has its faults, one of the main ones being that it posts and gets to the loading screen for windows and then just completely blackscreens. I formatted the entire hard disk and put a fresh install of win10 64bit onto it and yet it still doesn't want to work. I've managed to get it into safemode and it works successfully then but it doesn't want to work now so I'm not sure what the issue actually is.

Any help or questions are appreciated.

Most likely hardware issues try running memtest on it or take 1 stick of ram out see what happens and then switch it out with the other one if still no dice you can try installing linux on it and if still problems most likely motherboard/cpu problem and you mind as well throw it out it isnt worth much.

memtest didnt report anything, passed with no errors. going to try to get to windows diagnostics menu and open command prompt and try a chkdsk to see if that comes up with anything, if not, try to get to safemode and do a memory test and see if that returns anything.

i cant remove the stick because it's only one stick of ddr2 4gb, not two.

and throwing it away isn't an option either, i don't like to throw away parts that are still potentially working and it could be something that i can put to use for a used gaming pc build that i can sell on or keep for myself. q6600 isn't a bad CPU for its age as for the GTS 8800.

It is pretty old as well could have overheating issues you can try taking it apart and replace the thermal compound under CPU i see this quite commonly as windows loads it uses a lot of cpu cycles and then overheats on old computers before it loads into it.

sorry i forgot to mention that I already tried changing the thermal compound under the cpu, it's one of the first things i did after i realised the issue.

At this point there could be any number of issues if we take memory and overheating out of equation i would probably look at PSU as they age they tend to not provide the same wattage and tolerances especially if it was a cheap one to begin with.

alright, i'll dig through my spare parts and i'll replace each part individually until i find a link to what the issue could potentially be. i'll get back to you if i come across anything and if you have any other ideas feel free to tell me them so I can try them out
