OpenVPN on ASUS RT-AC87U: Can connect to the VPN remotely, but can't browse the LAN

Recently got an ASUS RT-AC87U WiFi router. I was hoping to set up a local VPN so that I could access my files while I was away. I followed the instructions from ASUS (which are little more than a couple of screenshots). I am using OpenVPN. Most of the advanced settings are set to default.
Note: my local subnet is 10.0.1/24. The subnet on the VPN is 10.8.0/24.
I then installed the OpenVPN client on my laptop. When I launch OpenVPN, it connects to the VPN and hands out a 10.8.0.x address. But I am not able to path or ping any of the computers on the LAN. Can someone point me in the right direction on what I am doing wrong here. I would love to get this working.
Thanks

Harlan

Thanks for responding.
I am testing outside of my LAN. Currently I am outside of it.
How would I go about bridging the VLAN's?
