I have an HP EliteBook with Windows 7. I was switching out the antivirus software I had on it, when the screen froze up. I tried killing the programne I had up, and after that the screen went to my desktop wallpaper- just that and the mouse, no icons, no bar at the bottom, none of the keyboard controlls seemed to do anything. I (stupidly?) tried to turn my laptop off after this, but it's still on and now the screen is completely black and unresponsive. What do I do?

Edit: Problem solved- laptop shut off eventually and was fine when turned back on. Possibly overheated.

"I was switching out the antivirus software I had on it"

Do you mean turned off your antivirus ? if yes then what type of antivirus program u were using

"I tried killing the programne I had up"

What type of program .. and how did u killed it? by deleting you mean?

Did you tried rebooting after like a hour ? How did this problem exactly happened? like what did u exactly do when this type of problem occured suddenly at that time.. ?

Also give me full specs on your laptop, i want to know what processor is it running as well as RAM .

Solved the problem. It was AVG that I was trying to uninstall. I'd already installed the replacement programme (Avira). When AVG froze up, a little window popped up and said AVG was unresponsive, and asked if I wanted to kill it (close it/stop running it) or wait for it to respond. I kept hitting the 'kill' option, but nothing happened axcept for the same window popping up over and over again. Finally the AVG window I had up (the one I was trying to close) disappeared, but took my taskbar and desktop icons with it. That's when I tried some keyboard controls (which didn't work) and then hit the power button, which shut off the screen. The computer stayed on for a while after that, but it finally shut off and after about half an hour I turned it back on and it was/is fine. I'm thinking it maybe just overheated (it's big and slow, and tends to get hot). The computer has an Intel Core i5-2520M CPU @ 2.50 GHz and a 64-bit OS (running Windows 7).

Ah i see, its true that sometimes laptop overheats over certain problems when it occurs but however i dont know since u forgot to mention your RAM size .. i think your laptop's RAM might be the problem(correct me if i am wrong) because maybe AVG ate up most of your RAM size and your whole laptop just got hanged up.. or AVG informed you to kill a program that is eating up alot of your RAM size, im not sure but i hope its completely fixed , thanks for informing tho.
