Looking to switch

Hey guys and gals,

I'll get right to my dilemma. I have an AMD FX8350 that I've overclocked to 4.6GHz, however I'm beginning to show signs of degradation (faing to apply overclock, slow downs, general performance issues) and I'm looking to upgrade to the Ryzen because of both budget constraints and AMD familiarity. Based on some reviews I've seen, basically every Ryzen blows the FX series out of the water (I imagine it's due to the increase to 16 rather than 8 threads, among other things). I've been looking at the 1700X vs the 1800X series. For mostly gaming, I'm guessing the 1700X would suffice? I'd like some input and opinions.

The other dilemma I've run into is the motherboard. I want to find a reliable motherboard to replace my old AM3+ mobo. However most Mobos I find at my local retailer (I prefer Micro Center to Newegg.) Seems to not have a very wide selection of mobos available in the AM4 config. (Mostly Gigabyte brand, which almost all have horrible reviews and I've had poor experience with GB myself in the past). Any suggestions on this as well?

Keep in mind that I currently run DDR3 1866 memory on my PC, though I wouldn't mind switching to DDR4 if need be. I do have and use an aftermarket Hyper 212 Evo cooler currently, which I learned the hardway, doesn't fit over the ram heatfins on my current setup, so avoiding that would be nice though I imagine I won't be OCing a new Ryzen cpu anytime soon, and likely won't require the Hyper cooler right away.

I would honestly wait a week and a half and get the 1600X. You will need to get DDR4 (buy low profile RAM this time) regardless of what platform you upgrade to. With the extra money that you can get a better cooler so that you can overclock. Ryzen's gaming performance is EXTREMELY dependent on RAM speed and not CAS latency, so I would highly suggest getting some 3000-3200MHz RAM and trying to get it working. This is a really good video if you need some benchmarks and context (the 1600X should be roughly as fast in gaming as the 1700X). As for the motherboards, I'd imagine the availability will be getting better as Ryzen 5 comes out, because if not they're gonna have a huge problem selling processors...
