Can my CPU show wrong temperatures?

I have an old i7-860. One day I decided to check temperatures that I get on my CPU when playing CS:GO because I wanted to know if I can think about overclocking it. Then I discovered that my CPU heats up to 106C. I haven't noticed any visible fps drop in game or anything like that. I decided to buy a new cooler since I wanted to overclock if the temps stabilize a bit after that. It went from 106C to 70C on full use and from 60C to 35C idle. Doesn't seem like it's showing wrong temps but I want to be sure if there can be something I'm doing wrong. And yes, I did apply the thermal paste.

I would use the manufacturer's motherboard utility to monitor the CPU temperatures . I have seen instances where an aftermarket utility didn't match up. But the motherboard CPU temperature sensor (thermocouple) is subject to failure as is everything electronic.

From your post, I would guess that you were successful in mounting the new cooler. Thermal paste does deteriorate with time, and it does need to be re-applied occasionally.

I will check that out later in the day but I have a question. What am I doing this for? How can I achieve different readings from BIOS and a software? Thanks in advance.
