I've used this forum a lot, and first, let me say thanks for all the great answers and help you guys provide to people like me, who don't really understand much.

I've been considering making some slow upgrades on my PC, since I've begun to play ARK, The Witcher, Dark Souls and other similar games.

Currently I have;
CPU: Intel Core i5-4440 @ 3.10 GHz.
GPU: MSI NVIDIA GeForce GTX 760
RAM: Vengeance 8gb
Motherboard: ASUStek Z87-k
PSU: BeQuiet 650W
Case; X-Strike

I'm considering upgrading to a Gtx 1070

My question is, will it be a good fit?
Also I'm considering throwing in 16gb of ram, but they have to be DDR3 right? Also, if you could come with some recommendations that would be amazing.

My last question is, since I read some where that my motherboard will bottleneck the GPU, is that right?

Solution

Upgrade your cpu later to a newer platform or start looking for a cheap i5 4690k or i7 4790k as your board allows overclocking. The psu should be fine as its one of their better psu's.
Motherboard probably not. But you'll want to check here to see if your CPU will be a bottleneck.

The results in this chart are intentionally vague. That is because it's really a case of YMMV, based on whether you overclock and what games you play. You might not notice anything or since you are upgrading to a substantially better GPU you'll only see gains so bottlenecking wont be apparent. I have a 1070 myself it's a great card.

Your cpu will bottleneck the 1070 in cpu bound games ark will be one of them. Can you list a bit more about your psu because BeQuiet has made plenty of 650w psu's and I want to make sure you have a good unit. Your motherboard won't bottleneck the card at all. Btw if you are upgrading to 16gb of ram it's best to get a 16gb kit and sell the 8gb stick to prevent compatibility issues between the 2 sets.

How much I can't say. All I can say is that having a strong quad core with ark is recommended. My fx 8320 vs my friends i5 4690k at 4.3 ghz resulted in a 22 fps improvement for him with the same specs (I sold most of my pc to him). You should still be able to reach 60 fps normally but most likely you'll have to turn the foliage and shaders down a bit to keep it at 60.
