I have a 6700k and a kraken x61 as my cooler. I had no idea the kraken came with thermal paste, so after I built my pc and I realized that I forgot to order thermal paste, I took the cooler off, and fudged the thermal paste. I scraped the rest off, and put the cooler back together. Thermal paste is arriving in one week from amazon, but I want to get a os restore before it gets here. Is that possible with my specs, or will it overheat the cpu?
Thanks

Solution
It will definitely overheat your CPU, metal on metal contact like that won't be able to transfer or dissipate heat. Don't risk going without thermal paste. It's not worth it. CPUs get hot very quickly, mainly a i7 that is unlocked. I would suggest going to a local best buy or computer shop and getting some if you can't afford to wait.

I got lost in the middle there ... You didn't buy it, that didn't matter cause it came w/ thermal paste part is OK .... but then you took it off ... why ?

Was what you bought as good as what was on there ? You'd be better off if you left the paste there than scraping it off but, they do sell TIM in local stores, even bestbuy

I ordered this, you won't find anything better on Amazon, and it arrived in 2 days
https://www.amazon.com/MASSCOOL-Shin-Etsu-Interface-Material-G751/dp/B000S35TB4

Tho cheaper here

Every time I have ordered TIM, it arrived in 2 days.

of course metal on metal transfers heat

its the tiny gaps where metal isnt touching metal that are the problem

as air is a relatively poor conductor of heat

hence thermal paste to fill the gaps

I meant as in it won't transfer as it should. Of course it will transfer, just not well.
You can of course turn on the computer and such if you want I just wouldn't recommend keeping on for longer than a few minutes.

will probably be ok though i wouldnt go crazy and run prime95 or something

boot it into the bios and see what the cpu temp is look at it until it stops rising

if it stays at a reasonable level then should be ok

but as said usually you can just go to a store and pick some paste up unless you live in the middle of no where instead of waiting for internet delivery

If you ever looked at any of the performance tests where they used everything from nothing to peanut butter and toothpaste (some of which are heat insulators) , its obvious that the claims of instant failure have no basis in fact. Not only have I run PCs with no TIM but also w/ no coolers ... granted I am not leaving BIOS. A PC used for web browsing and light gaming has nothing to fear from no TIM.

But of course...

a) You do have the ability to monitor temps and shut down if things get too hot.
b) The CPU will throttle / shut down if it gets to hot.
