Im building a new system and I cant wire my house for ether net because im renting my house and my router is only down stairs in my dads office. How can I get good wifi without buying an ugly wifi card? Can I just get a wireless router and get wifi through there and plug it into my pc?

I will agree with the other recommendation to get powerline.

You technically can get a device that you can plug into the ethernet port that can then connect to the router via wifi. It is not a router it is called a client-bridge. There are not a lot of indoor models that just do the client-bridge function. Most indoor devices also have wireless repeater abilities. You can though plug a pc directly into them and disable the repeater function and use just the client-bridge part if you want.

Not sure why you would really want to do that, its not like you can now hide a big "ugly" box since it must be able to receive the wireless signals.

Have you tried running a cable? Might just be a matter of popping off an outlet cover upstairs and dropping it down. Depends a bit on the construction, but the wires are getting up there somehow.

One of those metal strip things on a reel might help a lot with that. (I have no idea what they are called, but you can tie a string to them, run it up through a wall and pull it where it needs to go, tie the cable to the string and pull it back out)

Or, you know, ask the landlord if you can do it. Everyone likes ethernet jacks!

Another option is to get a WIFI range extender and then plug the computer into that with an ethernet cable. I have used that solution here to connect a computer in a room without ethernet cabling. Plus the range extender also transmits a WIFI signal so other devices in the vicinity can connect to that and perhaps get a better signal than it could get from the main WIFI router due to distance. I am using the Netgear ex 2700. I think it cost around $35.
