Would it be a good idea to upgrade my video card soon and upgrade my processor down the line?

I currently have the FX-6300 and a GTX 950 STRIX (Asus) and am wondering if it would be a good idea to upgrade to an RX 480 (or the equivalent when Vega releases) and then swap out my processor for a Ryzen 5 or Ryzen 3 closer to Christmas time. I currently have a 1440x900 monitor (I'm actually fine with this resolution for now, but I might upgrade it in a few years' time), so I know it isn't as demanding as a 1080p monitor would be. If I decide to upgrade my monitor in the future I'll pay the few extra bucks for an 8gb version.

Anyways, would I benefit from getting an RX 480 (4gb, unless I find a similarly priced 8gb) or RX 570 soon and upgrade my processor later?

I'm aware there is a bottleneck, but would it be a bad choice? I hate to splurge all at once, so I'm trying to avoid buying basically an entirely new computer. I recently got some more demanding games such as Hitman, and am wondering if I would be able to turn up a few settings or not.

Note: I have looked into the bottlenecking of an FX-6300 with the RX 480 and know it is a little rough. I'm just curious if this way of upgrading would be effective.

You can monitor your cpu and gpu usage during gaming and see which one is the limiting factor in your system.

In that resolution I would change the cpu first. But it will be more expensive because you will need new mobo and ram. You can OC your current cpu if your cooler and mobo allow.

And yes, fx6300 will bottleneck the rx480, but I think you will see some performance gains (depending on the games you play).

This is one of those questions where the answer depends on what you're trying to accomplish. Is there a game that is not performing as well as you'd like? If so, which game? What performance level are you trying to reach with that game?

The other thing is you can use MSI Afterburner to monitor your CPU and GPU usage while you play. If your CPU usage is up near 100% most of the time, while your GPU usage is lower, this means a videocard upgrade won't help you.

The point is there may be no point to upgrading your videocard until you're ready to build your new system.
