I am building a computer for my son and I am trying to go as cheap as possible.

The last part I need is a new cpu.. Currently have a amd phenom II 260..

I don't really want to buy a new mobo..

My current mobo is Asus M4A87TD EVO

The 2 cpu's I am considering is = a refurbished Amd phenom II x4 955 which is $55 or
brand new Amd Athlon x4 860k which is $55..

On toms cpu hierarchy chart, the 955 is higher then the 860k but are in the same box for performance.

Do you guys think the 955 is much better? I would rather buy a brand new chip vs a refurbished or used...

Is there another chip that you guys would recommend for the same price?

I am not trying to play 4k games or AAA on ultra settings.. I am looking to play most new games at medium to low settings..

I have a radeon 460x 4gb gpu..
plus 4gb ripjaws 1600mhz.

I have also looked at a new mobo and the fx series, however iam looking at around $130 or so for those which I am not really trying to pay...

any suggestions are much appreciated... the 860k is on sale on newegg for the next 9 hours.

Thanks again.

The board is AM3, with the 860K being FM2+, so they're not compatible anyway.

The 955 is roughly 8 years old now, so I wouldn't recommend it.

There is no Phenom II 260 AFAIK. There's an Athlon II 260, but it's not a compatible with that board either (as per https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/M4A87TD_EVO/HelpDesk_CPU/) So I'm even confused regarding your starting point....

With an RX460, a G4560 + compatible board would've been my recommendation, but also requires DDR4.

Ok I apologize, I am work... the processor I have is the Amd Athlon II x2 260 Regor 45nm.. I am looking for a processor for the board M4A87TD EVO which only supports AM3... ( I just realized its not backwards compatible with fm2+ durr)

Yes I am aware that the phenom chips are super old... But with getting the new gpu ( radeon 460x 4gb) I feel that my current processor is hampering my performance.. A lot of the current games require a quad core cpu.. ( at least in their min specs) I also just purchased DDR3 Memory for the current board I have.. So I am looking for a fix without upgrading the mobo.. I do understand you say the current chip I have is not compatible, but that is what was installed when I bought this computer 8 years ago...

So with that info, Should I get the phenom II x4 or x6.... I found the 955 for 55$ and the 965 for 70$ ... Based on toms hierarchy chart they seem to perform as well as say the fx6100... Or should I take my losses and wait to buy say a new board plus the FX 6300 or better...

Again this is for my kid and we will be playing games together but not at 4k or anything... I do prefer intel but its also rather expensive... I do see your suggestion for the g4560 but I am concerned that it wont handle well on games that say in the min specs quad core.. Also I am looking for the cheapest way possible..

Currently We are both playing The Forest, and on his computer we have to set it at super low settings or the fps makes it almost unplayable...
The min specs only suggest a intel dual core 2.4, however the recommended specs are a quad core...

Thanks for posting... so with all this information, is there any other suggestions.. Thanks again
