I currently have a r9 270x graphics card was thinking of upgrading to a EVGA GeForce GTX 1060 as I've always been a AMD person that has just gotten sick of most games being made for Nvidia cards I'm thinking of switching but don't know much about Nvidia.
Two questions
1. How much of an upgrade will this be?
2. Will this be compatible with my motherboard. I have an Asus Sabtertooth 990fx r2

Consider the GTX 1070 if you will be gaming on a 1440p/60Hz monitor or 1080p/~120Hz+ monitor. Consider the GTX 1080 if your monitor is 1440p/~120Hz+ or 1080p/144Hz++ or 4K.

Going from an R9 270X to a GTX 1060, you will see a considerable increase in performance (http://gpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Nvidia-GTX-1060-6GB-vs-AMD-R9-270X/3639vs2188).

All the aforementioned Nvidia cards are compatible with your current motherboard (as well as your PSU). Just check the actual card length that you will choose against the length clearance of your...
