I want to upgrade my CPU in the near future but my motherboard is somewhat old. My motherboard has an LGA 2011 slot and all the newer CPU's that fit a 2011 slot say they are compatible with an LGA 2011-V3 slot. Are these two slots really any different?
.
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-X79-UD3
Current CPU: Intel Core i7-3820

Solution
No, even though its also 2011 pin socket the layout is slightly different so it won't fit besides socket being a little different with the notches in different places. Intel was smart for that one to stop people from breaking sockets.

The X79 chipset for the 2011 and X99 is chip for 2011v3

The X299 2066 socket is coming Q3-Q4 this year so I would skip the X99 competently at this point.
I don't think the sockets are physically different, but you can't run your CPU on an LGA 2011v3 board or a new CPU on an LGA 2011 board. People still pay a lot of money for the 2011 boards (literally the price of a new v3 board), if you want to upgrade I'd do it. However, Skylake E will probably be shipping with a new socket, just keep that in mind. What are you doing with your computer? Ryzen might be a good option if you want more cores.

I am a gamer which is why I was thinking about upgrading but since my motherboard has a 2011 socket and the new CPU's fit 2011-v3 at this point I would need to upgrade my motherboard in order to get a newer CPU I believe.

I think your looking at XEONS which is true, V2 works on X79. For X99 it's only V3 (and v4)no matter what the list is, though not all XEONS are supported on consumer boards.

The the Socket is called 2011v3 with 2011 pin layout which uses the X99 Chipset (consumer one).
