Is a CPU worth upgrading for gaming?

I am a pc gamer and I am wondering if upgrading my CPU is worth the money. I currently have an Intel Core i7 3820 runs at 3.60 ghz. Does a core i7 6800K (or anything) really run better than a 3820 just because its newer? Just because a CPU is newer then does that mean it runs faster or when buying is CPU do you pay attention to the GHZ?

The Intel Core i7 3820 is starting to show it's age but it's still a decent CPU.
It would depend on what GPU you have, you may gain extra performance if you upgrade to the 7700k if you have something like a GTX 1070/1080/1080ti.
