I do not know what model my old sticks are, is there any way to tell by looking at it or can I just put them in my newer computer without worry? My current RAM sticks are DDR3.
Ah sorry I think I didn't explain myself correctly, I don't want to use them together, I want to sell my old ones but am unsure if they are still in working order. I assume your response means that I can test this with no issue as long as I remove my current sticks, is that correct?
We will need more info.
See if you can get your motherboard model, and atleast find if the old ram is DDR3 or DDR4
My motherboard is Gigabyte GA-Z97X-SLI (rev. 1.2) (http://www.gigabyte.us/Motherboard/GA-Z97X-SLI-rev-12#ov)
The RAM sticks are in the Ballistix Sport series, I can't quite track down the exact model but from the bits and pieces I've found I'm pretty certain that they are DDR3.
Getting unmatched ram to work together is problematical at best(even with matching brands, makes, models, etc), impossible at worst.
If both sets are DDR3(and the same voltage, timings, and speed), all you can do is try. They will either work or not.
Since all I want to do is see if they work or not, could I just replace my current sticks with the old ones?
Assuming both sets are DDR3, you can try it. Even if both sets work individually, that doesn't mean that they will work together. They could be different speeds, timings, even voltages, and that would preclude them from working together.
