Windows XP factory reinstall: partial network access

I inherited a virtually brand new Sony Vaio laptop from over 11 years ago. It is running Windows XP SP2. It remained literally dormant until I got my hands on it.

When I tried to connect to the internet, I was unable to. Back in the day, I helped the now deceased setup their laptop. I know it worked back then.

Unfortunately, now it no longer connects despite doing a full factory image restore.

What happens is the old outdated IE 6 browser won't connect...or actually only partially connect to Yahoo's webpage telling me to upgrade to Firefox and even then the scripts are all messed up.

What I ended up doing was downloading onto a USB drive Firefox. I was able to connect but only after agreeing to so many certificates. Each time I would visit a site via FF, I was warned and had to accept the certificates before I can browse.

My guess is that XP has expired scripts that prevents the OS to access the internet.

I am thinking I may need to download from another PC maybe Microsoft Framework or who knows what to get the laptop to access the internet.

I did manage to update to service pack 3, but I had to do a few registry hacks before it would install it. However, this did not fix the issue of not being able to connect to the web.

One more thing, I updated the OS to Windows 7. I was able to gain internet access, but I had a few yellow flags in device manager for the video and mass storage controller. Besides, the laptop ran ridiculously slow after the update so I redid the factory restore and started fresh.

Any suggestions to get the laptop connected fully to the internet?

I have a old Sony Vaio laptop that is virtually the same. It's great solid hardware. I just did a factory reinstall and installed SP3. Even doing all that it still does not like the internet or browsers. My old POS Gateway works great on XP after doing the same procedure.

I finally installed Linux on the Sony and It works great. So unless you really need XP try a Linux Distro that matches your Hardware.

Unfortunately, there is no info at Sony's website with the exception of drivers. They don't even have Vista drivers. Regardless, the notebook is virtually non usable running Win7. The performance is that bad.

I have now installed a fresh clean OEM version of XP Pro with Service Pack 3 and I run into the same issue. I know in my older Dell notebook which still runs XP and has been updated regularly through the years does not have this issue.

I installed Maxthon browser and it is telling me the certificates are invalid, which matches that of FF. The issue seems to be the certificates. XP is using old certificates and I imagine Vista does as well. If I can get my hands on updated XP certificates, I am thinking I might be able to XP to connect normally to the internet?

It's really a pity. It's a very nice laptop to type on and do some word processing and light web browsing. But I do need connectivity. Each time I access IE it has that old Otherwise, I will have no choice but to dump in the electronics recycle bin if I can't get it to work :(

EDIT: There are some older threads online about people porting the certificates from Windows 7 to XP but the links are dead. Even certificates going back to 2014 are not working now.
