Current Motherboard:
http://www.gigabyte.com/Motherboard/GA-G31M-S2L-rev-10#ov

It is not bad for my son to use, but getting limited for some games due to the RAM limitations.
It has:

4GB of DDR2 (max for motherboard)
EVGA GeForce GT 730 2GB GDDR5
Intel Core2 3.0 Processor

Any suggestions I can look at for a Motherboard/CPU/Memory upgrade without spending a fortune?

It currently has a 5400 RPM drive, but I have an older SSD that will go into it soon.

He complains mostly over PvZ2 and Battlefront being a bit laggy.

You could buy a replacement motherboard that supports 8gb of ram and buy a 2 x 4gb kit of ram.
But, I would not do that.

You can buy today a kaby lake cpu like the G4560 that has 4 threads and out performs any core 2 processor for $65 or so.
A B250 based motherboard will be around $70, and a 2 x 4gb kit of DDR4 ram will be around $35.
If you might ever want 16gb, spend $35 more and buy that up front.

Such a motherboard can in the future support I3, I5, or even I7-7700K cpu upgrades.

A ssd will make a big difference, do that at least.

Thanks to all that replied. I needed a good starting point as I built the current computer 10 years ago, and finally starting to show it's age. I'm just replacing parts as needed, as what I love about having a desktop.

Computer is running Windows 10.

I finally just ordered the following for my kids computer upgrade:

Intel Pentium G4560 Kaby Lake Dual-Core 3.5 GHz
G.SKILL Ripjaws V Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 2400
GIGABYTE GA-H110M-S2H

It currently had a Nvidia 730 GT (DDR5) 2GB card, that will likely get upgraded around Xmas time.

You should not have purchased an H110 motherboard. There is a good possibility the BIOS for that board won't support your CPU out of the box. That is why all the recommendations in this thread suggested a B250 motherboard.

I did not question it as this was a Combo deal as offered by Newegg - will have to ask.
