Can't downgrade to Windows XP on Acer Aspire AOD255

I got this netbook some time ago and I know it had Windows XP preinstalled when it was bought 6 years ago. Now it has Windows 7 on it but for my purposes it is absolutely unusable (not responsive, stutters, doesn't want to cooperate at all sometimes). Since it only has 1GB of RAM I decided to downgrade back to XP so it has at least some use before it passes. I tried booting from a flash drive (I used Rufus) with no results - this netbook has the worst BIOS I've ever seen - there's nothing you can do there. I updated it to newest version without success. Of course I set the Boot order right. Tried all the USB slots. Flash drive is working on another computer. When the BIOS is trying to load the instalation of the XP the black screen just passes on to loading into Windows 7 again. What should I do?
Please help.

Good point, I did buy a new DDR2 2 gig sodimm from amazon for 15 bucks not long ago...OP should perhaps consider a lightweight Linux Distro, Mint or the like, use the XFCE desktop. I do know that netbook is capable of USB boot....I have one around here somewhere...
