Hi Everyone, I really need some help and solution to my problem. I bought the MSI R9 290x about a year ago to play games in Ultra settings. I play games like H1z1, Dayz, 7 days to die, and other similar games. The problem i am having is that every time i try to run any of those games on High or Ultra settings, the card temperature goes over 92c and somehow my computer is turning off completely and i am not able to turn it back on until it cools down. Sometimes it takes 4-5 hours before i can turn the computer back on. I really need some help because i have good cable management and i dont understand why is overheating.

Please see my computer specs below and also a couple if pictures of my computer.

Asus Sabertooth 990FX R2.0
AMD FD8350FRHKBOX FX-8350

Please Help:(

The 290X is quite old by now. Are your GPU fans at 100% usage? It is one of the hottest GPUs ever created.

Things to try:

1. Update the graphics cards BIOS (if any).
2. Try replacing the thermal paste.
3. If none of the above work, is your warranty still below the expiration date? If so, definitely use that to your benefit.

Quite old? I bought this card in 2015. Since when do i need to upgrade gfx cards every 2 years. Anyways, thanks for trying to help, i am going to clean it and add some thermal paste. Not sure what else to do.

My cpu is running at 40c on heavy load. Do i need to invest on a liquid cooling for the gpu card ? Like one of those nzxt gpu liquid coolings?

If not, how can i prevent the computer from shutting down? How can i turn that setting off? is this something i can find on the Bios?

if your pc turns off that means there is a big chance to do some damage to your gpu and even your mobo, so you should not avoid it, try to fix it.

Not the CPU itself, but the heat sinks around it, especially the one left of it in the picture! That should be in the air flow of a cpu cooler. A top blower is recommended for a power demanding cpu like the 8350.

It came out in 2013, 4 years in GPU time is a while. Doesn't mean you need to upgrade, just means newer ones are more efficient. Thermal paste and maybe cranking up the fan curve sounds like a good first start to me. In addition, if it has any thermal pads between the VRMs and heatsink might be worthwhile to make sure they're not dried up and cracked.

Definitely sounds like the thermal paste is bad. Get some good thermal paste, re-install the cooler and it should lower the temps immediately.. Mine is pretty heavily overclocked, using a RAIJINTEK MORPHEUS II CORE EDITION and it tops out at 70c. Only reason I will be upgrading is for 4K(and a lower power bill, lol). Everything at 1080p is handled on ultra (at least with no ambient occlusion) Almost everything beyond 1080p brings it to its knees.
