Best External SSD for Boot Drive

If you're speaking of a Windows OS, none.
Windows really, really does not like booting from an external drive.

And if you eventually get it working, it will be much, much slower than a regular internal drive.

It's not an ideal way to run Windows but I've managed to run it from a USB 3.0 thumb drive using WinToUSB (similar to Windows to Go). It's slow for sure.

But it gets the job done. I'd like something a bit faster though.

A SanDisk Extreme 500 portable has the following speeds.

Much better. But I'm asking here since most reviews generally focus on sequential benchmarks while a boot drive is anything but sequentially read from.

What exactly does Windows not like about booting from an external drive?

As you mentioned, it requires workarounds.
And you're trying to push the data through the USB port, which introduces its own slowness.

The only need to run it from an external is to move this back and forth to new hardware. Which then introduces licensing and activation issues between the multiple systems.

Can it be done? Yeah, if you want to go through that much work.
May I ask why the desire for an external drive vs an internal one?

I've got a piece of software that I'd like to run on different computers at different times.

But you're right, licensing may be an issue. Hadn't thought of that. I wanted to be able to run the software on my laptop when I'm at school and on my desktop when I'm at home.

The software I'm trying to run generates something called a Target ID based on the computer's network card.

Well, I guess I could just install the software on my desktop and remotely access it.
