Ok I need the veterans of the community to weigh in here, but of course everyones thoughts are valued here, What are some of the most graphically impressive games you used to play back when Windows XP was the norm?

Lets avoid the obvious Crysis series, I'm trying to find the gems, the games that captured your hearts and minds and attention spans for hundreds of hours, and of course, all those graphics didn't mean diddly if you couldn't play that game with your friends, so some sort of multiplayer mode is preferred, multiplayer online is obviously better than split screen

Your answers will be used to weigh in and construct a list for a top ten video which will be posted to YouTube, so everyone's answers are valid and welcomed, so please, if you haven't already, go dig out your ancient DVD/CD case from when games actually came on physical media, go steal your grandpa's Athlon X2 backup computer that he put in the closet when he got his NEW shiny core 2 quad, and let me know what you think!

Star Wars Battlefront (not EA's 2015 one) I and II's graphics were pretty at the time and their multiplayer was superb. They have plenty of maps which include in either ground or space battles. Many different game modes. One of my favourite game mode is where you get to play as your favourite heroes or villain such as Obi Wan or Darth Vader.
You are right about crysis, it was (and still is) visually impressive, but the gameplay is actually rather mediocre. It was more known for the graphics and high system requirements.

  • One of my all time favorites is the good old Unreal Tournament 2004.

Battlefield 2 was also nice, but the servers ahve been shut down for some time now and on recent drivers there are graphic glitches unless you lower the image quality.

Borderlands 2 was quite impressive, especially if you like its cel shaded look.
Basically alot of Unreal Engine 3 games (Bioshock series, Borderlands, Dishonored) An Engine I still detect when I see it. It has it's little quirks.

Don't forget the good old Half Life 2, it'S a classic. (including CS:S and L4D whose run on the same engine)

Command & Conquer 3 and Civilization 4 impressed me alot back in the day. Putting the established series into actual 3D graphics.

Another classic is GTA San Andreas (although we mostly played it on PS2 back then, looks and runs even better on PC)

Don't forget Morrowind, Oblivion and Fallout 3. They were typical for Bethesda RPGs (A bit buggy at release, textures not too great, but the worldbuilding and immersion were impressive (Especially Morrowind in it's time)

The old Star Wars Battlefront games were a killer in multiplayer.

Devil May Cry 4 really surprised me with the usage of SSAO and HDR.

Far Cry had thos impressive surroundings, think of it like Crysis, but earlier and with more actual gameplay.

Homeworld was quite impressive, it moved the RTS into 3D with free movement in space.

I actually enjoyed Risen alot back in the day. Quite similar to Gothic 3, but not as buggy :D

Who could forget the Sims, although the 2nd game was the impressive for me.

Surpreme Commander had enourmous battlefields, from little skirmishes all the way up to continent spanning battles.

So far what easily comes to my mind. Some of them are gtting fired up even today. Games that were impressive back then. (atleast to me) and are still worth paying today.

I'm sitting here looking at my first build, an AMD Athlon FX 3000+, 2GB DDR, nVidia EN8600GTS...

I'm only 29 years old, I'm no grandpa! :p

*Er-hem.* Most graphically impressive XP-era games? Half-Life and Half-Life 2 spring to mind; Halo: CE was another good one, although it did look better on the Xbox than on PC.

Actually, now that I think about it...Doom 3. It had all the modern graphics stuff: Beautiful shadows, diverse maps, you name it.
