Hi guys,

Just wondering if someone could give me some advice on upgrading my PC. It will be used for work, streaming and gaming, I like First person shooters, open world games, and MMO.

My current rig is:

FX8350 - overclocked 4.5ghz
Captain 240EX cooler
Gigabyte ud3 990fx
16 GB Kingston valueram 1866mhz
2 X GTX 780 in SLI
Samsung SSD x 2
WD Green 2 TB

I game on a 1440p BENQ monitor and I would like do be aiming over 70 FPS in games smooth.
My current setup has trouble keeping up with games like titanfall 2, bf1 at 60fps.

Guess my main question is, should I upgrade the platform or GPUs? I know the FX8350 is a bottleneck so I am thinking of starting with the platform? My problem is if I work on the platform first will I still be suffering performance wise with the gtx 780s untill I upgrade them? OR would I be better off getting new GPUs and work on the platform later? I know Ryzen 5 and all that is coming out soon but I don't mind swinging intel if i'm going to get more stable, better performance and obviously performance per dollar is a deciding factor aswell.

I was looking at the i5 7600k with some type of ASrock motherboard (I like the look of their BIOS)
any suggestions would be appreciated.

Cheers.

I was thinking the same as you, see how Ryzen 5 stacks up. I was going to just upgrade the GPU setup but after reading about 10,000 threads of FX8350 bottlenecking (which I know just saying is opening another debate) I thought maybe the FX was slowing the GTX 780s down.

I guess they just haven't aged well. I have had this setup for a few years now, and I'm neither a AMD or INTEL fan, just like PCs in general and want the best bang for my buck. lol

Same here - I have some of both. Aside from a select few games, generally if you're aiming for 60 FPS, and especially at 1440p, the FX chips will generally keep up. There are known games, mostly those that rely on high instructions per clock, that run horribly on a FX (ARMA 3 comes...

what is your budget if you were to switch platforms ?

i am thinking upgrade your gpu because you can always take the gpu with you to a new build. you may well get the performance increase you're looking for and won't have to spend $$$$$ and if you don't then look at the new build. the fx 8350 is still a reasonable cpu to be fair .

edit: i would opt for a single gpu .. which one? that depends on your budget of course :p

would be hard to recommend a build for that price range because i am not sure of what case and psu you already have .

either of those gpu's will give you a massive performance increase over your current gpu setup. bf1 is apparently badly optimised and even runs into problems with core i7's. i have played it @ 1080p high detail on an rx 480 with a pentium g4560 and have not seen problems.. but i only played single player.

if you do want to look at a new build.. feel free to post up what case and psu you have .. and i ll do my best for you :)

you can use your case.. cooler.. psu hdd's and ssd's plus your current gpu's . i opted for an sli board for this reason. you could choose faster ram than 2133mhz.. but i am unsure if you need to buy a new OS or not .. so i left you with the money to buy that .

that is what i thought .. but i think the OP is thinking about the long term upgrade. the gpu would be the quick fix option though.

I am in the market for a CPU upgrade this year as well, but I will not buy anything until we see how Ryzen 5 stacks up against the i5-7600k. Even if they still can't stack up in gaming benchmarks, pricing might get even better on the Intel setups.

As we begin to see games written for more cores, I'm wondering how well the old platform will keep up.

Mine started life with a 750ti I picked up cheap, then went to a GTX 970. I'd say it's aged pretty well for what it is, but I plan on revamping the whole system for a refresh at some point in the near future. 7-year-old laptop will probably be replaced first, though.
