Looking for a drive that comes out of the box ready to be read and written to by both Mac and PC. Is there any such thing? I really don't want to mess around doing this and that to make it work.

Solution
And it depends on what version of windows you install and what version of OSX you have

It looks like Vista supports exfat, but you have to install SP2. Win7 supports it. Win 8 / 10 supports it

And you need OSX 10.6.6. For it to support exfat

okay thank you. I went to the Paragon page and am just starting to read up on this. I really had hoped to avoid having to do a bunch of stuff to get the external drive to work with both. You'd think after all these years these two companies would have at least created an external drive that could read and write for both operating systems. Guess we're still in the dark ages of the PC/Mac wars. Ugh.

I'm buying a brand new external hard drive that I will use to store files from a Mac and then put those files on a PC. I don't know anything about exFAT but apparently my first step would be to format the new external drive in exFAT? Guess I need to read up on how this is done. Is this simpler than using the Paragon HFS+ ?

Just plug the drive in, right click the icon, choose Format, choose exFAT.
