How much of an upgrade is this?

Hello. This is what I'm currently running.

Cpu: Amd 8350 8 core 4.0GHz
Motherboard: AsRock 970 Performance

This is the upgrade. (All I know currently)

Cpu: 990 x
Motherboard: Rampage 3 Extreme

The idea is to get better performance for gaming. Playerunknown's Battlegrounds, Arma 3, Blackwake are a few of the games I'm currently playing that have trouble with performance. Mainly FPS.

Hard to say whether it'd really be much of an upgrade at all; it'd depend on intended use as well as how much more you'd have to pay for the 990X, ultimately, and even then it may not necessarily be much of an upgrade. Considering the I7 990X currently sells for over $1k new, and around $500 used, while a new AMD 8350 sells for $130, the 8350 wins in the value/price/performance category. The TDP of the 990X = 130W; TDP of 8350 = 125W. Note: The 990X is the overall better CPU, though the 8350 still ends up beating the 990X in several benchmarks, and vice versa. If strictly for gaming, the 990X may not be much of an upgrade. The 8350 supports a larger memory bandwidth, has more OC potential, but is more power hungry than the 990X, depite it's lower TDP. The 8350 is more or less on par with the 990X when it comes to single core performance, but the 990X's 6 cores/12 threads has more L3 Cache, natively supports faster DDR3 RAM. It'd be interesting to see more modern day honest comparisons between these two CPUs, tested on newer OS & APIs, games, using the same components in similar setups.
