So, about two years ago I bought this https://www.scorptec.com.au/product/Hard-Drives-&-SSDs/HDD-3.5-Drives/65221-ST2000DM006
2tb HDD because my other one was almost full.

It was fine at first, but not long after I would start getting errors. My windows would randomly shut down, and most commonly, my windows would boot up with random black screens, sometimes with cursors and most of the time not. Other times my PC would randomly boot up and shut down on its own. These errors usually persist for about a few hours, and at worse a few days,

I usually fixed this (or not) by just repeatedly turning it on and off, and most of the time it worked, but it doesn't lately, which put me into a lot of stress.

Funny thing is, my computer would always boot up fine in safe mode. At first, I thought it was some PSU problem, not being able to handle a second HDD, but I got a 750w corsair, I reckon it should have been alright, and yes, my computer booted up alright in safe mode, so I thought it must have been wrong. And if it had been my PSU all along, my computer shouldn't have been able to handle my computer for the last two years, but these problems don't happen all the time.

Then I thought it had been a driver acting up, so I went to the device manager in safe mode, and I actually found a weird driver with an unknown sign next to it, and every time I restarted, it will keep popping back up again.

So at my wit's end, I decided to unplug the SATA cable from my new HDD, and my PC booted up. No more freezing, no more errors, it booted up perfectly. And then I restarted my PC after replugging it, and that's how I've been coping up with my PC so far.

But then it no longer works anymore, and I realised that this condition is far from normal and I don't even know what's going on. I'm going to return the item tomorrow to claim my warranty.

Does anyone here have any idea as to what's going on with my PC acting up when my hard drive is installed?

Thank you.

At first glance I would say the hard drive is faulty and should be replaced.
It has been known to happen, and is likely just part of the computer component lottery :p

As for other ideas if you want to experiment a little more:
- Try plugging both hard drives into different SATA ports, adjusting the boot menu so the correct one loads the OS
- Try a different power connector for the second hard drive, perhaps the connection is loose

Good luck!
