Poor gaming performance/ Unable to play almost any game.

Hey guys,

I have been noticing that my PC lately has becoming slower and slower: I am having huge problems playing any type of games on it (slow, laggy, poor FPS) even though I put everything on low graphics and high performance. Here is my rig (It's a bit antiquated I must admit):

GPU: GeForce GTX 970
CPU: Intel i5 3570K @3.40GHz
Motherboard: ASRock Z77 Extreme 4
Ram: 8Gb DDR3

I am literally to my wits end and have been able to play only low res games like Terraria etc...
Also, the games I am trying to play right now are Diablo 3, Heroes of the Storm, Warhammer (but I usually just turn them off after 2 min of pure agony).

Any thoughts????

its not that antiquated another 8gb of ram wouldnt hurt but shouldnt be that bad

probably something in the background is either hogging the cpu

or excessively writing to the hard drive

Overheating probably? Or some process causing 100% disk usage?
Check those things first.

BTW - amount of ram is rather low for gaming system.

for cpu temps something like coretemp or realtemp

for excessive cpu usage/disk usage in task manager

edit in task manager can use resource monitor for more detail

1. Check how many programs are running in the background, remove the unnecessary ones. Do the same with your installed programs.
2. Run an antivirus scan
3. Get CCleaner and "clean" your pc (you might aswell do a registry clean, just make sure to save a backup when prompted and scan three times)
4. If your pc hasn't been physically cleaned in a long time, get an air compressor and get the dust out beacuse it may be the cause of potential overheating.

If all else fails and if nothing works at all, do a fresh install as your last resort.

FYI nothing wrong with the age of your CPU and amount of RAM; absolutely fine for gaming. I've got an even older system (i7 960) still rocking it in gaming.

Also what is the make of your PSU?

I tried the SSD health app and it says it is 96% so thats probably not the problem; the PSU is PC Power and Cooling PPC Silencer 750W MKII

check the fan/fans on it are spinning

if so somethings wrong with how its mounted

yes thats a possibilty

or even too much paste is a possibilty

if the fans are spinning

then you will have to take the cooler off to check

looking at how the paste spread will tell you if it was too much/not enough/wasnt mounted flat

oh yes at 100c it will be thermal throttling 100% sure about that

and the right amount of thermal paste is roughly the size of a grain of rice or tiny bit bigger

not the size of a pea like some people do

clearing all that dust out will certainly help

not sure whether will cure it or not or will still have to look at the paste/mounting as well
