What is a good temperature for an i-7700K CPU when idle and when gaming?

Just built my PC yesterday and my CPU was jumping in numbers a lot like 40-55 celsius when idle 55 rarely but it was like 45 celsius average when idle. I thought to myself that is too high since when I game my water cooler Kraken x62 GOES HAM on the fans to cool the cpu, while the CPU ran to 65 to 70 celsius.

Watched a youtube video saying if I lower the Processor Power Management to 75% (because it is 100% default) it will better the temperature and drop it. I did that and.....

My CPU now idle is 39 sometimes 43 and jumps around only in between 39-43 when idle. I thought to myself that is good. I tested by loading a game and the CPU was like 55 sometimes 60 here and there occasionally for a split second or two. I thought to myself "WOW that really helped!"

Is my CPU temp currently after my fix good or too high? If so what is the normal temp for an i7700k cpu when idle and when gaming?

(ALSO what did I do by lowering the 100% to 75% for the processor power management?)

Thanks in advance

Use a monitoring service like CPU-Z to see what speeds your processor is running at. Stock speed is 4.2 GHz and with turbo boost enabled that speed should be 4.5 GHz under load by default. If you are interested in overclocking there are many good guides on this site and others on how to do it.

Is your cpu overclocked?

65 to 70c is perfectly acceptable under load. That chip runs a little hot I would say your temps are normal and nothing to be worried about.

I wouldn't recommend changing processor power management if you are overclocking, it could adversely affect your target speed.

I am not overclocked I do not know how to, unless it comes overclocked in that case then I am lol. How do I check?

Yup it's not a big deal, your cooler is doing the job. And I'm surprised you don't overclock an unlocked CPU. Well no it doesn't come overclocked but it's clock speeds are already very high. That's why it's called (over)clocking since you're going over the limits and pushing your processor to the limits.

Hey, so I have my CPU i7 7700K running on both OC and normal. My Normal i7 7700K is at 4.2 (CPU Idle Temp of 29 Celsius) and 4.5 OC (CPU Idle Temp 35 Celsius) for day to day and gaming use.*

While i know you can OC for gaming, I actually am gaming at 4.2 (CPU Temp of 37-46 Celsius on average with Kraken 62 at 100%. There are some individual core peaks at 50 Celsius, but that's if I have my Kraken 62 at 50%-70% and my cores not aligned, you can do this in your bios with most motherboard bios)

Note* I also used the stock Kraken 62 Thermal paste it came with, I think if I repasted with Arctic Cool or Grizzley it may actually lower the load temp back to 30-35 potentially. I know a few friends have Custom watercooling loops with stronger water pumps than my Kraken. (usually these are underpowered)
