Choosing an SSD for storage

Hi folks,

I'm looking for ideas for either 2x500GB or 1x1TB SSD for storing samples on. It's a drive that probably won't have a ton of write, more read than anything. Super high speeds are probably not that relevant, but I'd like to ensure it doesn't have issues that cause it to slow down specifically.

It'll be a drive for streaming demanding audio samples from for composition purposes. I have a few 2TB 7200RPM's but they don't seem to cut it for really demanding samples.

The obvious is a Samsung EVO 850, but it's a little on the pricey side for 1TB. There's also the OCZ MX300 or WD Blue but they seem to have mixed reviews. There are some considerably cheaper SSD's on the market too but I'm not sure they're worth the money.

Any opinions on what a good in-between would be? I know the obvious answers for which SSD's are competitive but it's harder to find info on drives not used as boot drives and competing for high performance.

You could always slap those 2tb drive into a RAID 0 array to get some extra speed. Wouldn't do that for critical data though.

Really almost any modern SSD would be fine, as it is usually the write speed that defines the high end with the read speeds being very similar across most due to limitations of the storage controller.

I have a Trion 150 480GB that I uses as my OS drive and I cannot recommend it for your purposes. It is fast enough but it throttles during heavy read operations due to heat. If you are performing giant sustained reads you may need to invest in some extra cooling for it though as they will get quite hot and throttle under very heavy load.

Thanks folks. I recently found an open box 850 Evo M.2 for about $340CAD. Worth it, assuming the full warranty is in effect?

I have an ASRock Pro4 z97 mobo which I think accepts both SATA and PCI-e M.2.
