Buying a Soundcard to give me better surround sound in games

So I play video games. Mostly, Counter Strike, which is a competitive game which relies a lot on you to understand your surroundings and audio is a big thing.
My PC is currently a Dell Inspiron 620, which I have upgraded everything but the motherboard. I feel that the built in audio is the reason for my poor gaming audio. It feels as if there is no surround sound at all. Feels like all I hear is left and right in my ears. A player running behind me to my right will sound as if they are in front to the right or even right next to me. I've tried Plantronics 388 and Plantronics 788 which I was told are both excellent for positional audio.
I was told the 788 is a USB, 7.1 surround headset and it will not use the audio in the motherboard, but it seems the exact same. Even when I enable the dolby surround sound, everything still sounds as if they noises are coming from my right and left. I've had friends tell me that they can pinpoint everything and when they watch me, they can hear all sorts of things that I can't

I have come to the conclusion that perhaps I need a sound card. I would like to know would this fix my audio problem and improve positional audio or is it something beyond my control and I just have bad hearing?

Right, dell motherboards are pretty downscaled compared to a commercial/mainstream motherboard. That's what you get for "saving" money by going to buy a Dell brand. lol.

So yes, you have stereo sound (left/right). It's basic. If you want surround sound, you could try an external sound card, like SoundBlaster Omni 5.1 as a DAC(amp)/sound processor for good sound around $60 (used) or $80 (new). Audio does take an investment (just like comparing $10 speakers/headphones vs $100 speakers/headphones). Hope that helps.

the usb one you mention is a sound card

if you want another, well, be sure that your dell has space for a sound card, also what port you have there free, if it has the old pci port free, well, you need a old sound card on that port, a creative sound card

if you have a pci express port, then a asus or a creative are your options
